Choosing the Right General Contractor for You.

Check client references

• Are they satisfied with the quality of the workmanship and products installed?

  Check professional references.

• Ask about scheduling and reliability
• Ask about how timely the subcontractor is being paid by the general contractor.
• Ask about the level of quality that the subcontractor feels the general contractor produces.

  Choose a contractor that you feel comfortable with. This person may be spending quite a bit of time with you and in your home.

• The contractor should not be your enemy. He is there to work with you and to make your project go as smoothly as possible.

  Ask the contractor the level of experience of his crew.

• Leads vs. laborers. How long employed with the company?

  Discuss bids in detail.

• Do not automatically choose the lowest prices One contractor's bid might be higher because the materials to be used are of a better quality or because the work will be especially thorough and, therefore, require more labor.
• Price should not be the deciding factor. In today's market, you truly do get what you pay for.

  Check with the Better Business Bureau. With the business license number, you can check with the state to see if there has been any liens against the bond or the license of the contractor.
